Fall 2019 GEA Vegetable Garden Initiative Update

GrowEastAfrica.org (GEA) is actively working in the Burji District of SNNPR Ethiopia. We work with internally displaced peoples (IDPs), primarly ladies, to improve their livelihoods. They grow nutritional vegetables, teff, and quinoa on 4.5 hectares of plot.

In 2018, GEA installed a drip irrigation system on one hectare of the land for growing vegetables year round. Last Fall, the ladies planted tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, onion, and carrot. The vegetable harvest was abundant.

However, the same period planted teff and quinoa yields were very disappointing. Fall 2019 planting period had unexpected continuous heavy rain for over a month followed with complete stoppage of rain. The heavy rain after planting washed away the quinoa seed while the lack of rain later in the season thwarted the growth and maturity of teff.  As result, the Fall 2019 teff yield was only 1/3 of the expected harvest.  This video presents the result of Fall 2019 planting and harvest of Vegetable Garden Initiative.
